The Samsung Galaxy R, a lesser spec’d variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II, was plagued with hardware problems not long after it’s release, and production was soon halted. Due to this, it’s certainly not one of the busier device forums on XDA. That said, we can report that the Galaxy R has now received an unofficial port of ever popular CyanogenMod 10.
XDA Senior Member Adam77Root (with the help of XDA Senior Member karthik050782) has worked his magic and has managed to get a semi-stable release together for Galaxy R users. Though currently labelled “Alpha 2,” the list of working features is enough to get most device owners salivating:
- Mobile network
- Data connection
- Audio (microphone may or may not work, works for calls but doesn’t for some others like, Google Now voice search.)
- Wi-Fi
- Video player (may or may not work)
- Accelerometer, magnetic field, proximity, battery temperature sensors
- BLN feature (you need to install either the free or the paid version of BLN Control from Play Store)
- Auto brightness needs manual workaround
- USB mass storage
From that list we can see that the majority of features that define a smartphone are working as required. The only issues listed as not working are:
- Camera and apps which require a functional camera. (even the camera app isn’t included)
- Bluetooth
- Anything which requires a functional mic except for calls, which aren’t affected.
- Gyroscope (It is disabled deliberately as it causes issues with deep sleep.)
There are a few workarounds required for various thing, but considering the ROM is still in an alpha state, the functionality of the ROM is impressive.
